Some days on the »Seute Deern«
Ohne Crew kann kein Schiff ablegen – und ohne Schüler:innen keine High Seas High School starten. Damit Ihr wisst, wer hier segelt und in diesem Blog zu Wort kommt, wollen wir Euch hier so nach und nach die Leute an Bord vorstellen. Zum Teil auf Englisch – unserer Bordsprache:
Lisa:
Ahoi, my name is Lisa and I live and study near Frankfurt. Currently I’m 15 years old and I’m a fencer but I also play the drums. I adore ice-figurscating but I also love to read and draw. Right now I am siting on a adage where everyone gets cake at 3:30 pm, wile next to me crew A gets in our sixt sail because today it was our first time we had all of our 6 sails set. Its really exiting just like a big adventure but I can’t deny that, for someone like me who isn’t used to it, it’s also tieding. We just have the third day, but if I could I would spend my howl summer vacation like this. Well, aside from the little sea-sickness.
Anika:
Hi, I’m Anika. I am 14 years old, I live in Stuttgart and after the holidays I will go in 9th grade. I have a brother, I play tennis and do gymnastics. I am on this ship, because I’m interested in sailing. I want to learn how to sail and what to do. I already started the ship during day and night and climed in the bow sprit. Also I helped hosting and dousing the sails. It make fun to sail and I feel great.
Kara:
I’m Kara and am 14 years old. I live near Wiesbaden and I go to school at the Obermayr international school in Schwalbach. I have three younger siblings and a two year old Golden Retriever.
I really love to draw, be creative and especially to do all kinds of water sports (including sailing, wakeboarding, diving and swimming). This is the reason why I decided to go on this sailing trip to learn many new things and experience new adventures. In the holidays my family had the tradition to visit the Baltic See for three weeks in the summer holidays. Since the Coronavirus this tradition could not go on. Luckely, I was able to be a part of this adventure.
Until now we had a lot of luck with the weather and I can’t wait to swim in the Baltic See to cool down from the constant sun. Today for the first time we have raised all of the six sails and the plan is to arrive at Skarrgen. This is a town which is located in the top of the north of Denmark. Our plan is to arrive this evening. I can’t wait to explore the little town tomorrow and if we are lucky we will visit the coast of Sweden in the next remaining nineteen days.
Henrike:
Hello, my name is Rike and i’m 14 years old. I life in Frankfurt with my parents and my two sisters. I go to the Carl-Schurz-Gymasium which have a line “Ideale sind wie Sterne, wir erreichen sie niemals, aber wie Seefahrer auf dem Meer richten wir unseren Kurs nach ihnen”.
We are only three days on the boat, but I like it very much. Unfortunately I’m sometimes a little sea-sick, but my body is already adjusting. On the boat is not very much space, the kitchen (Galley), the bathroom and the sleep places are very small, but it’s enough to life. Today in the evening we are about to reach the harbour in Skarrgen, a little town in Denmark. Everyone is very excited. In the beginning of the voyage we had to pass our phones, but ashore, soon in Denmark, we get them shortly back to make some calls. I miss my family a bit but my holidays are amazing. It will be very nice, when we go in groups to a supermarket or something like that and visit the place.
At the moment the weather is very good for sealing, its windy and the sun is shining, hopefully it’s gonna stay like that. We can wear short clothes when we use enough sun cream:). When I’m on watch with my team, my favourite task is the helm. When I’m doing the charts, I’m very sea sick, so I don‘ like that very much.
I’m very thankful, that I have the chance to be here and meet all these new people. I can’t wait to discover more, experience everything and also see my family in three weeks again.
Elena:
Ich bin 13 Jahre jung und auf der Seute Deern wegen meines Bruders. Er war letztes Jahr auf diesem Schiff und hat viele tolle, beeindruckende Geschichten von seinem Törn erzählt. Außerdem habe ich bis jetzt noch keine Segelerfahrung gesammelt und freue mich über die Möglichkeit, auf der »Seute Deern« – einer Gaffelketsch – mitzusegeln. Am beeindruckendsten war für mich, den großen Zweimaster selbst zu steuern. Bereits am zweiten Tag durfte ich in einer meiner zwei täglichen Wachen am Nachmittag ans Steuerrad, bzw. Ruder. Auch messe ich mehrfach am Tag den Luftdruck, die Temperatur, berechne die relative Luftfeuchte, bestimme Windrichtung und Windstärke. All das ist wichtig, um zu sehen, wie der Status des Wetters ist und wie es sich entwickelt. So wissen wir genau, wann wir die Segel setzen können, welche Segel es sein müssen z.B. Besan- oder Großsegel, und wie wir diese ausrichten.
Anouk:
Hallo ich bin Anouk, 13 Jahre alt und lebe in Hamburg. Ich habe zwei Geschwister, einen Bruder und eine Schwester. Wegen meiner Schwester bin ich auf die Idee gekommen, hier mitzusegeln, denn sie hat die lange HSHS Reise gemacht und fand diese sehr toll. Da mein Vater öfter segelt, versuche ich Segelerfahrung zu sammeln, um ihm zu helfen und mit ihm zu segeln. Bis jetzt macht die Reise sehr großen Spaß und ich habe sehr viel gelernt. Von Knoten, wie den Palstek und den Achterknoten bis hin zu Besansegel oder Großsegel setzen. Das war zwar sehr schwierig, hat aber Spaß gemacht, weil wir dies nur im Team umsetzen können.

Isabel:
Hey, my name is Isabel, I´m 13 years old, I am living in Kattendorf, which is a small village close to Hamburg and I have three lovely younger siblings. I really enjoy horse riding on islantic horses, playing the trombone and the violin. I also like baking and reading. Now I´m a big fan of sailing, too. I read about the Seute Deern and Clipper in the newspaper and really wanted to go on this Törn. I actually didn´t expect that it would be able to happen, until I became it as a voucher for Christmas. It´s sooo cool to sail, to learn so many new and exciting things and to see so many new and beautiful places. I especially like to sail with the ship at night, but sadly we did it not many times so far yet. I hope we are going to do it more often.
Meine Philosophie: Zeit braucht man, aber es gibt sie nicht.
Werden einem 10 Sekunden eines Tages gestohlen, sollte man nicht versuchen sie zurück zu holen, sondern den Rest des Tages fröhlich zu verbringen.
Ella:
Hi, mein Name ist Ella. Ich bin 14 Jahre alt und komme aus Stuttgart. Meine Hobbies sind Leichtathletik und Klavier spielen. Bei diesem Segeltörn habe ich mich angemeldet, da mich der Alltag auf einem so großen Segelschiff sehr interessiert. Bis jetzt hat sich der Segeltörn als sehr spannend und schön erwiesen. Ich bin gespannt auf die noch folgenden Tage und freue mich auf eine weiterhin gute Zeit.
Leonhard:
Hi, my name is Leonhard and I am 14 years old. I live in the north of Hamburg, I have a dog (and a sister). I love to play tennis since I am 6 years old. My father and his friend bought a sailing boat in 2018 or 2019, that is the reason why I am on this ship. The last days were very interesting and exciting because of all this new impressions.

Hello, my name is Julian, I’m 14 years old and I live in Cologne. I’m sailing since 2012 with sport sailing boats and it’s a new experience sailing with boats like this one. I’m on this boat because I want to try living some weeks with a whole crew on a ship! I try things before saying that it’s not mine. I want to make my own experience by discovering other and different activities.
Caspar:
Hello, my Name is Caspar, I am 14 years old and I live in Cologne. I am sailing since 2013 on the Chiemsee. There we have sport sailing boats and I wanted to feel how it is to live on a boat for 3 weeks. Its so different to sportly sailing boats.
Thamodie:
Hallo ich heiße Thamodie, bin aus Hannover und habe eine älter Schwester. Ich spiele Handball und Klavier. Als Überraschung hat meine Mutter mich hier angemeldet und ich freue mich riesig, dabei zu sein.
Antonia:
Hey, mein Name ist Antonia und ich bin 15 Jahre alt. Ich komme aus der Nähe von Lüneburg und habe zwei ältere Brüder. Ich reite, schreibe und zeichne gern. Vor ungefähr zwei Jahren habe ich auf dem Ratzeburger See meinen Segelgrundschein gemacht. Meine Mutter ist auf das Programm der Summer-HSHS gestoßen und ich wollte – nachdem sie es mir gezeigt hatte – gerne mitmachen. Glücklicherweise ist es jetzt auch so gekommen.
Johannes:
Hallo, ich bin Johannes, 14 Jahre alt und wohne in Bad Kissingen. An diesem Törn nehme ich teil, weil ich etwas über das Segeln lernen möchte. Vielleicht segel ich danach noch weiter. Ich habe einen kleinen Bruder und zwei ältere Schwerstern, von denen eine auch dabei ist.

Hallo, ich bin Philip, 14 Jahre alt und wohne im Odenwald. Ich habe auf dieser dreiwöchigen Tour das Ziel, etwas über das Segeln zu lernen und es auch richtig anzuwenden. Bevor ich hier teilgenommen habe, hatte ich noch keine Segelerfahrung.
Paulina:
Hello, my name is Paulina. I’m 15 years old and I have been on the Seute Deern for 5 days. I have two little brothers and one older sister. My hobbies are playing tennis, playing the piano and riding. Also I really like hiking and climbing in the mountains. There aren´t any mountains here, but I hope I can climb into the shrouds. I have never been on a sailing ship before so there are a lot of new things to learn. Of course I was very excited at the beginning, but I have accustomed very well.
Actually I am very interested in all the new impressions, that will come.
Benedikta:
Hallo ich bin eine Schülerin des Sommertörns 2021 und bin 15 Jahre alt. Ich wohne in der Nähe von Frankfurt und habe drei Schwestern. Eine Freundin von mir nahm vor ein paar Jahren auch an einem Segeltörn teil und erzählte mir davon. Dies erweckte mein Interesse es selbst einmal auszuprobieren. Von der Tour erhoffe ich mir am Ende viel über das Segeln erlernt zu haben. Ich habe riesen großen Spaß an der Reise und meine Highlights des Törns waren bisher die schönen Städte und Felsstrände Schwedens.

Ich habe mir dieses Zitat ausgesucht, da es mich an eine Situation von gestern erinnert. Als wir gestern ein Foto aus einer bestimmten Perspektive machen sollten und dabei erst scheiterten, sagte Nathalie »Ihr werft das Handtuch weg« und das war richtig, wir gaben auf. Nur da es nicht beim ersten Versuch klappte, wurden wir laut, unruhig und hatten keine Lust mehr, doch nachdem Nathalie das gesagt hatte, versuchten wir es als Team noch einmal und machten ein super schönes Foto.
Kilian:
Hello my name is Kilian and I am 13 years old. I live in Mannheim with my parents and my big brother. He is now 17 years old. He is the reason, why I make the Summer High Seas High School, because he made the long HSHS trip and said it was great. In the last 5 days I made very interesting and exciting new experiences.
Robert:
Ahoi, ich bin Schüler der Summer HSHS. Ich wohne nördlich von Hamburg und bringe bereits ein paar Segelerfahrungen mit. Durch den Sommertörn erhoffe ich mir den Ausbau meiner Segelerfahrungen. Mein Motto lautet: Egal ob Rückwärts oder bergab, Hauptsache es läuft.

Nathalie (Projektleitung und Erlebnispädagogin):
Ich bin Nathalie und fahre auf der Summer HSHS 2021 als Projektleitung und Erlebnispädagogin mit. Seit drei Jahren arbeite ich bei High Seas High School und bin dort unter anderem für die Organisation und Durchführung der Summer HSHS zuständig. Was ich an meiner Arbeit am meisten liebe, ist, beobachten zu dürfen, wie die Jugendlichen tagtäglich an den Herausforderungen und der Verantwortung wachsen. Peggy und ich sind zwar das pädagogische Team an Bord, die größte Pädagogin ist allerdings das Schiff …
Ein besonderer Augenblick für mich in der ersten Woche unseres dreiwöchigen Törns war zu erleben, wie die Jugendlichen einen Konflikt, der die gesamte Bordgemeinschaft betraf, selbstorganisiert, gemeinschaftlich und konstruktiv angegangen sind und erfolgreich lösen konnten.
Als Teil der C Wache verbringe ich die Wachzeiten mit Christoph, Anouk, Leo, Isabel, Lisa, Philip und Elena.
Peggy (Umweltpädagogin):
Ahoi, mein Name ist Peggy, seit 10 Jahren unterrichte ich Menschen aller Altersstufen im Bereich Umwelt und Globalisierung. Auf 37 Metern Länge segeln Nathalie, die Clipper-Crew und ich im Team der Summer HSHS 2021.
Mit Vertrauen und Zuversicht reisen wir nun seit sieben Tagen auf unserem Schiff. Je mehr die Jugendlichen an Bord gezielt Verantwortung übernehmen dürfen, umso mehr lernen sie über gemeinschaftliches Wirken. Der Zusammenklang im Miteinander, der Natur, die Verbindung der Elemente in einer stetig sich wetterbedingt verändernden Umgebung, ist eine der ehrlichsten und lehrreichsten Erlebnisse, die ein Mensch sammeln darf.
So verstehe ich es als großes Glück, dass die jungen Heranwachsenden an Bord gemeinsam in diesen drei Wochen wachsen. In der A-Wache sind Annika, Ella, Kilian, Johannes, Kara, Paulina, Antonia und die erfahrene Steuerfrau Frauke mit mir in einem Team im Zusammenklang. Täglich freue ich mich über die Wissbegierde der jungen Segler:innen.
Christoph (Steuermann):
Moin, ich bin Christoph und bei der diesjährigen Summer HSHS als Steuermann an Bord. Ungefähr im Alter unserer Schüler:innen segelte ich 1977 zum ersten Mal mit den Pfadfindern auf einem traditionellen Segelschiff und die Segelei hat mich seitdem nicht mehr losgelassen. Ich bin mit Nathalie, Elena, Philip, Lisa, Isabel, Leo und Anouk in der C-Wache und gleich in der ersten Nacht hieß es: Männer und Frauen wie wir = null vier (Wache). Und es war einfach toll zu sehen, wie Isabel, erst wenige Augenblicke an Bord, die Seute Deern von der Pier und aus dem Hafen steuerte: plus est en vous …
Fred
Fred is our ingenieur on board, called the chief. In this position he is responsible for our engines. Early in the morning, some already wake up by the sound of a starting engine. Then everybody knows: Fred is awake and started the generator for us to have electricity: During the night the generator is turned off and only some lights and the instruments on the brigde are equipped with power. So thanks to Fred, we have warm water, tea and coffee in the mornings!
He is not only responsible for the main engine, but for all pipes, pumps, machines, electricity and water systems. In short: All the facilities that keep the ship running.
Fred is 54 years old and has been volunteering for Clipper for the last six years. As a board member of the organisation Clipper DJS, he spends most of his weekends and free times with the Seute Deern and the organisation. Only good things can happen, if you do good things.
Klaus und Michaela
Klaus and Michaela are our chefs on board: Both have been with Clipper and the Seute Deern for many years! Everyday they bring delicious food on the table and fill our empty stomachs, even when the sea is a bit rough. And with our 5 birthdays on board during our trip, we get spoiled with cakes a lot!
Manni
My name is Manni, I am 68 years old and responsible for the big sail. After my retirement I found my way back to the love of my youth, to sailing. 2012 I went on my first sailing trip with Clipper with the ship ‚Albatros‘. I was so excited about it that I decided to stick with Clipper for the years to come. My favourite ship of Clipper is the ‚Seute Deern‘ where I take care of the ropes and charts. For me, sailing does not stop in winter as I spend lots of my time to furnace, stitch and work on the ship so that it can blossom while sailing.
What I enjoy most about ‚Summer High Seas High School‘ is to work with the kids, and this year is my second year as a basun in this programm. It is refreshing to see the teenagers on the ship, they bring a vivid atmosphere to every task they take on.
Rolf
Rolf is our Boatswain (Bootsmann) and is responsible for the maintainance on deck of the ship. He works as a carpender. In his free time, Rolf has been with Clipper and the Seute Deern for the last 16 years and volunteers not only on the ship, but also during the winter when the ships are being prepared for the next saison. His love for the community on board, new adventures during every trip and supporting the kids learning how to sail always brings him back to the Seute Deern.
Frauke:
Hallo, mein Name ist Frauke. Seit 2013 fahre ich fast jedes Jahr als Steuerfrau auf der Summer HSHS. Ich bin 1994 das erste Mal auf der Seute Deern gesegelt und seitdem in dieses wunderbare Schiff verliebt. Im Winter helfe ich regelmäßig mit, dass unsere Seute jedes Jahr wieder das schönste Schiff der Clipperflotte ist.
Bei der Summer HSHS freue ich mich jedes Jahr auf die Jugendlichen, die innerhalb kürzester Zeit ein tolles Team bilden und superschnell die Aufgaben der Wache erlernen und sehr verantwortungsbewusst ernst nehmen. Ich habe mit der A-Wache ein sehr zuverlässiges Team, auf das ich mich verlassen kann: Peggy, Anika, Antonia, Ella, Kara, Paulina, Johannes und Kilian.
Niko:
It is a great pleasure for me to be the captain of this amazing crew. I am sailing with Clipper since 1985 and since 1995 as a captain on all the four ships of Clipper. I was born in 1953 in Hamburg and now I live in Reinbek, a very nice town nearby Hamburg. It is very important for me, to pass the knowledge to the younger generation how to handle traditional ships. I show young people where the real enrichment of our times is. It is the nature around of us and it is our responsibility to beware it for the following generations. And one of the best ways to show this our younger guys is sailing. Only by sailing you can learn that we can’t rule nature but we have to learn living with her and bewaring her.
